Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit: Every Major Death RANKED

16. Grima Wormtongue - Return Of The King Extended Edition

Haldir lord of the rings
New Line Cinema

This entire sequence is incredibly compelling and we will return to discuss it in full detail later. But for now, we are focussing on the demise of this simple second-hand villain.

Grima Wormtongue was brought to life with such vigour and maliciousness by Brad Dourif. The role was cartoonish but grounded by a clear motive and performance. His death at the beginning of Return of the King's extended edition was quick and lacking any fanfare and as such is quite disappointing.

In this scene, Grima is not the primary focus, and in fact, his presence feels far more circumstantial than anything else. His sudden desire to attack his master Saruman has some decent motive behind it, but the film doesn't give the moment of his death any gravitas whatsoever. After Legolas strikes him with a well-placed arrow, he goes down, and after a small focus on his fall, the character is never mentioned again.

It makes sense for this part to go out without a bang but still makes it one of the weaker deaths in the series.
