Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit: Every Major Death RANKED

9. Haldir - The Two Towers

Haldir lord of the rings
New Line Cinema

The death of Haldir at the battle of Helms Deep is a strange occurrence in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as we hardly even knew this role. Despite this, the sequence is given an unbelievable amount of gravitas, which could have felt very unfounded and pointless but works incredibly well for a few reasons.

While it uses dramatic slow motion for the kill, the actual death doesn't overstay its welcome, as when Aragorn catches the brave elf, we find that he is already gone. Then Aragon respectfully embraces him and then we move on with the battle.

The build-up is intense, but the actual scene itself is short and sweet, allowing for a lovely moment to say goodbye to a character who we hardly knew.

The scene itself also shines because it isn't really about Haldir, it's about Aragorn. This moment is a way to show how much Aragorn appreciates those who fight for him and is one of our first indications of how he acts as a leader in a large-scale battle. For this, it ranks higher than others, even though the character we lose is insignificant.
