14. The Shot Of Odo Proudfoot Is A Tribute To Ralph Bakshi's Animated Version... - The Fellowship Of The Ring
Peter Jackson wasn't the first person to attempt to bring Tolkien's magnus opus to the big screen, you know: back in 1978, animation icon Ralph Bakshi attempted to do the same thing with his own animated version - to middling results. The film was a valiant attempt to tackle the material, but lacked oomph (not to mention it just ended halfway through). Still, Jackson decided to pay homage to his filmic forebearer when he opted to include a shot of hobbit Odo Proudfoot sitting with his feet up during Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday celebration speech. The shot mirrors one from Bakshi animated version, glimpsed at the moment when old Proodfoot shouts "Proudfeet!" to audible hobbit laughter. It's a nice, subtle moment - one that nicely acknowledges a fellow Tolkien director...
