Mad Max: Fury Road - 10 Reasons Critics Are Calling It A Masterpiece

8. It's A Feminist Blockbuster

"Few people, surely, were expecting robust feminism from the new Mad Max film - yet here we are." - Robbie Collin, The Telegraph "As Fury Road unfurls, it becomes a surprisingly feminist tale: Miller spinning a yarn about women reclaiming their agency from an oppressive system that has long denied them any sort of autonomy." - Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair "Movies on this scale have often been the worst offenders when it comes to failing to put women and the issues they face at the fore. But Fury Road is a brilliantly feminist blockbuster which passes the Bechdel test with flying colours." - Emma Simmonds, The List
Perhaps the last thing that one would expect from the likes of a Mad Max film is for it to emerge as a fully-fledged feminist blockbuster (especially in this day and age, where fewer and fewer filmmakers actually seem to care about gender politics). And yet George Miller has somehow rendered his action extravaganza as a "brilliantly feminist blockbuster." Wow. Given the inherent premise of any Mad Max movie (big desert; relentless violence; cars), coupled with the fact that Fury Road is essentially one long chase, it's a genuine wonder that there's any time for feminism theory. But it looks as though Miller's film manages to embrace feminist themes because it bothers to have strong female characters.
