Mad Max: Fury Road - 10 Reasons Critics Are Calling It A Masterpiece
6. The Glorious Special Effects Work (And Lack Of CGI)
"Astonishing. Achieves its grotesque, magnificent brutality in an old-fashioned way that serves as a smackdown to bloated, sterile CGI monstrosities." - MaryAnn Johanson, Flick Filosopher
Back to those practical effects, then. The general consensus seems to be that George Miller and is team have - quite frankly - outdone themselves with regards to the effects work glimpsed in Fury Road. It's no wonder that it took the crew a whopping 138 days just to shoot one particular action sequence in the film (you'll know it when you see it, apparently). Whilst most critics have praised the restrained and surprisingly minimal blend of practical effects and CGI in the movie, many have also agreed that it's not quite clear which aspects, exactly, have been rendered with computer graphics. Which is to say, any CG effects that have been used aren't all that apparent - which is how CGI is supposed to work!
