Colin Gibson, who was responsible for designing and building the various colourful war machines and cars seen in the film - as far back as 2003 - offered insight into how the designs came to life. Miller and the storyboard artists worked extensively on how the War Rig in particularly would look and how the characters would interact on it.

Gibson also said that Miller used classic John Wayne western Stagecoach as an inspiration for creating a moving location where the film's action plays out over a long period.
