Mad Max Fury Road: 5 Awesome Moments And 5 That Sucked

5. Sucked: The Five Wives

Mad Max Fury Road Villain
Warner Bros.

For all the talk of this being a "feminist blockbuster", the handling of the five wives is somewhat problematic. These poor gals have lived for who knows how long as Immortan Joe's "breeders" - basically sex slaves who's only purpose is to provide sons (one dreads to think what happens to the daughters) for Joe to raise as future warlords.

They're rescued by Furiosa, and when we see them all together for the first time they are hosing each other down as the camera lingers just a fraction too long on their glistening bodies. This isn't done purely for the sake of titillation - it actually serves as a sight gag because we first see them from a very confused Max's perspective. It would have been fine if they were all properly fleshed out afterwards, but they're not.

That's not to say they are only there as a plot device - and Abbey Lee, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all give fine performances - but at the end of the day a film that does so much for gender equality in other areas really should have ensured that these five characters  were distinguishable by more than just their hair colour.
