Madame Web Review: 1 Up & 9 Downs

6. It's A Technical Mess

Though there's a compelling argument to be made that the world needs more mid-budget superhero movies, the $80 million Madame Web is an absolute trainwreck from a technical perspective.

Where to begin? The film is chaotically edited to within an inch of its life, with both the slapdash action sequences and frantic premonitions suffering from their fidgety inability to just sit still and focus on any one image for more than about a second.

The camerawork isn't good, either: director S. J. Clarkson bafflingly over-uses both annoying shaky cam and pointless zooms, and this being a recent Sony Marvel movie, of course the visual effects are also horrendously ugly.

Beyond the basics of the film capturing watchable, decently exposed images, this is extremely rough around the edges and one of the wonkiest-looking blockbusters released lately - though at least not quite as hideous as Expendables 4.
