Angelina Jolie's Maleficent is set to hit cinemas in the not too distant future and if the buzz accompanying the release of each new trailer is anything to go by, this is going to be a huge hit for Disney. It's surprising really that a project like this was only recently green-lit. For years, Disney has mined their classic back catalog for inspiration, churning out a number of sub-par animated sequels that are usually released directly to the home entertainment market. Unfortunately, they have usually suffered with inevitably unfavourable comparisons with the originals. Maleficent has excited audiences by re-imagining a beloved classic in a completely different light, exploring events through the eyes of the villain instead of the heroine. Sleeping Beauty may have been named after Princess Aurora, but the real star of the piece was always Maleficent, a notion that has got a lot of people thinking: which other Disney villains deserve their own origin movies? Throughout Disney's rich history of animated classics, many iconic villains have threatened to steal the show from the goody two-shoes who try to save the day, so it's about time the Disney villains had their turn in the spotlight. In order to not complicate things, the choices made here have all been selected from the Walt Disney Animated Studio Films, so unfortunately, that means no Sanderson Sisters or Captain Barbossa...
