Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs
1. The "Plot" Is Generic & Predictable
Look, nobody comes to a Mamma Mia movie - and especially a Mamma Mia sequel - to soak in a rich, nuanced narrative, but even for the rather forgiving standards of a musical melodrama, what passes for a story here is pretty damn flimsy.
You'll see every twist and turn coming a mile away because it's all telegraphed comically far in advance, and most of the plot machinations are basically sub-soap opera level quality.
Some will certainly enjoy that the movie basically leans into its tawdriness, but it honestly feels like the filmmakers just picked the songs they wanted to see performed, then haphazardly linked them together with a loose plot they rustled together over a boozy dinner.
It's functional and mostly makes sense, at least, but any time the movie actually starts to buy into its own story - which thankfully isn't very often - it becomes the wrong kind of laughable.
