Man Of Steel: 10 (Probably Failed) Attempts At A Measured Reponse To Fan Reactions

man of steel I know, I know... another Man Of Steel rant. But stay with me for a bit. While it's already been a polarizing summer for movies, Man Of Steel has raised nerd passions to a frenzied level that's usually only reached when George Lucas is involved. With that in mind, I've waited a week to talk about Zack Snyder's take on Superman. Hopefully, a little time has mellowed my opinions and granted a little perspective. There's a reason this movie has received so much discussion: there's actually something to talk about. It's full of beautiful moments that stand well on their own, but don't completely come together. And if this is a Superman film for our times, then it's a troubling roadmark of where we are in 2013. Like Chris Nolan's Batman films, it's amazing how easily people can co-opt these movies to fit in with their own beliefs. In the interest of creating a civilized discussion, I'd like to take a look at some of the more debated topics from this film. But before we go further, let's start with the facts of the case. I'm a thirty-four year-old male, a middle-class liberal American, and an all around smart-ass. Superman isn't my favorite superhero, but I grew up with the Richard Donner Superman films. Those films are part of my childhood - but nothing about them is sacred to me. Reinvention and reinterpretation are necessary for superheroes to say relevant - and at some point your personal version of your favorite Man Of Steel, Caped Crusader, or Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is going to fall by the wayside. That's not a bad thing. So here are a few thoughts on Man Of Steel from an all around smart-ass, whose own version of Superman has probably gone by the wayside.

Jeremy Wickett was raised from an early age in one of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's classier opium dens. A graduate of The University of Oklahoma, he now resides in Phoenix, Arizona - where the desert heat is oppressive enough to make him hallucinate that he's a character in Star Wars. And of course he can speak Bocce - it's like a second language to him. His so-called musings can be found here: http://geekemporium.blogspot.com/
