Man Of Steel: 10 (Probably Failed) Attempts At A Measured Reponse To Fan Reactions

5. The Zimmer

I'll take John Williams over Hans Zimmer any day. Williams' original Superman score is arguably one of the best film scores of all time. That being said, I am biased: I was born in '78, which means that Williams' music is kinda hard-wired into my nerd DNA. Still, Hans Zimmer's score didn't do a lot for me through most of the movie. I've never been a big Hans Zimmer fan. His music is often like the movies he scores - big, flashy, and soulless. There's a reason why he's an easy fit for all those Jerry Bruckheimer movies. I think the collaboration between Zimmer and James Newton Howard on the first two Batman movies is what made those scores work. Without Howard, the score for The Dark Knight Rises lost much of its heart and soul. I was disappointed to hear he was writing the music for Man Of Steel. For most of the movie, his score lived up to my very low expectations. Then came Superman's theme, "What Are You Going To Do When You're Not Saving The World?" Listening to it again on iTunes, I ate a little bit of crow. It's been at the top of my writing playlist ever since. It's truly a soaring piece of music. I don't know if it changes my opinion of Zimmer much... but there's no harm in admitting when you're wrong, or not living up to the nerd stereotype of thinking that someone is totally awesome or completely sucks.

Jeremy Wickett was raised from an early age in one of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's classier opium dens. A graduate of The University of Oklahoma, he now resides in Phoenix, Arizona - where the desert heat is oppressive enough to make him hallucinate that he's a character in Star Wars. And of course he can speak Bocce - it's like a second language to him. His so-called musings can be found here: http://geekemporium.blogspot.com/
