Man Of Steel: 5 Ways Zack Snyder (Hopefully) Has Grounded It In Reality
4. Suit and Cape
Iconic, awe-inspiring and as far as I can tell, pretty damn pointless. How much less effective would Superman really be if he decided to do good deeds in some slacks, the sweater he wears on laundry day and a ski mask. He'd sure be making life a lot easier for Clark Kent. From the footage released so far it looks as if Superman's suit is made of the same stuff as the other Kryptonians' Why is it blue and red, though? The rest of Krypton seems like a very grey and purely utilitarian place. Is Kal-El just fancy like that? There needs to be a pretty good justification for how he looks. Superman also appears not to have the armor that goes over that suit. Mom and Dad not packing a full outfit for their baby boy does not make sense to us yet.
Clearly all Kryptonians have a cape fixation. It's one thing if that was just their favorite fashion item like a hipster's skinny jeans, but they are wearing their capes into combat. Why are hipsters entering combat in skinny jeans? What we as an audience demand, if we're going to be asked to take these people seriously, is that we're at least offered some explanation for the look we have to live with for very nearly 3 hours.
We still have not seen a very reasonable way for Clark to transform into wearing the Superman suit at any moment. Knowing the believable logistics of that very mundane, but very important feature of his life is the kind of thing that could separate Man of Steel from every other TV and film incarnation.
