Mark Wahlberg For THE CROW Remake? Seriously?!

Once again I find myself talking about remakes, but this time I have to admit I'm not actually dead set against a redo of cult film 'The Crow'. That position is largely due to the fact that I don't think the original ever matched up to the frenetic hype that always surrounded it (or the curious mythology that was part and parcel of the film's cult). But I do love the original James O'Barr comic and have always felt there was enough in there to warrant another go.

I'm also excited by the idea of musical legend, and relatively-newly discovered writing talent Nick Cave has been working on a rewrite with Stephen Norrington ('Blade', 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' ) attached to direct.

My problem with the news that Bloody Disgusting have exclusively announced is that the actor of choice for the film-makers is Mark Wahlberg.

Yep, Marky Mark, the man who has already proved that he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a superhero/vigilante film thanks to his "efforts" on 'Max Payne'. The problem with Mr Wahlberg, and the reason why he is definitely not the right choice to play the new Crow, is that he is at his best when he is playing ordinary characters or working class characters - think of his best performances in 'Boogie Nights', 'The Departed' and 'The Lovely Bones' - and he comes undone when his character requires a certain excess. And there Wahlberg finds it difficult to draw the line, and instead of adding that flamboyance, he seems to get confused and ends up looking hollow and difficult to believe.

Relativity Media's remake of 'The Crow' will be set in Detroit and will tell the story of a recently murdered man who is brought back to life as an undead avenger who is out to seek revenge against his killers.
