A decade ago, if you had told fans that they would one day see Kurt Russell play a character called Ego the Living Planet in a movie about the Guardians of the Galaxy - and a sequel, no less - alongside a lovable, sentient baby tree and a talking, gun-toting raccoon, most people would likely never believe you, yet here we are, it's happening, and people all over the world are excited that it's happening.

The identity of Peter Quill's father was a mystery in the first film: His mother called him an angel. Yondu called him a jackass, going so far as to keep Peter for himself rather than deliver him to his own parent. And even the Nova Corps suggested that, whoever or whatever he is, he's unlike anything they'd ever seen before.

And now fans - and Peter, of course - finally get to meet him. As discussed earlier, the overall plot of the sequel is still a relative mystery, as is Ego's role in it, and while Ego could turn out to be a good guy in the end, considering his history as a villain in the comics, we wouldn't put too much stock in him being the angel Peter's mother made him out to be.

Russell is a great and welcome addition to the MCU, and whatever Gunn has in store for this larger-than-life character will undoubtedly make a lot of people happy in just a matter of weeks.
