Marvel Cinematic Universe: Definitive Guide To Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And Foreshadowing

The Avengers

8. Coulson (Unknowingly) Compares Loki To Thanos

With his dying (sort of) breath, Coulson taunts Loki, claiming he's going to lose because it's "in nature" and he "lacks conviction". While this is somewhat showing Phil's astuteness - as revealed in the mid-credits scene and Thor: The Dark World, the real plan was never to take over the world - it also serves as a hint at the introduction of Thanos; in the comics, the mad Titan's big weakness is his subconscious desire to fail.

7. Captain America Cards Feature The First Issue

After a prominent presence in Captain America: The First Avenger, the cover of Captain America #1 makes another appearance here, on one of the bloodied cards "found" on a dying Agent Coulson.

6. Earth€™s Mightiest Heroes

Adopting the name of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s original initiative (did he check with the rest of the team before choosing it?), Tony refers to the newly-formed Avengers as "Earth's Mightiest Heroes", a direct nod to the tagline of the original Avengers comic.

5. Ambidextrous Hawkeye

In the comics Hawkeye is ambidextrous, a semi-essential trait of the master archer, which was, somewhat surprisingly, brought over to the MCU. It's already impressive given how unnoticeable an element it is, made only moreso when you learn Jeremy Renner is right-handed in real life.
