The first film in the series after the box office smashing The Avengers, Iron Man 3 makes the conscious decision to be a very much stand-alone entry; while Tony Stark's wormhole experience in the Battle of New York provides a key character motivation, there's noticeably fewer outside references, a stark contrast to Iron Man 2, which went in completely the other direction. Many of the in-jokes are, in the spirit of the original movie, focused tightly on Iron Man; new director Shane Black likes to nudge towards comic book specifics as much a predecessor Jon Favreau and any of the call backs to earlier movies tend to be to Tony's, rather than Steve's, Bruce's or Thor's.
