Marvel Cinematic Universe: Ranking All The Endings From Worst To Best

8. Guardians Of The Galaxy

James Gunn€™s Guardians Of The Galaxy is a great film. It has its own identity, it€™s packed with likeable characters and it single-handedly opened up a whole new galaxy of possibilities for the MCU. Beneath all of the quips, hard-talking raccoons and bird-flipping protagonists however, is a deep vein of schmaltz that only just manages not to derail the movie. The finale of Guardians takes place both in the air and on the ground and it€™s the bit on solid ground that is actually pretty wobbly. The aerial section, where the Nova Corps fleet form a shield to prevent Ronan the Accuser from landing, is brilliant. It€™s got the sort of thrilling dogfights not seen since the original Star Wars trilogy, a real sense of jeopardy and the bit where Groot sacrifices himself to protect his friends. We are Groot, indeed. Where it falls down is the melodramatic final confrontation with Ronan. Quill€™s distraction dancing is very fun, but the team using the power of friendship and camaraderie to harness the Infinity Stone€™s potential and vaporise Ronan, complete with arm-linking and serious face close-ups, is just a step too far into the cheese, and that€™s without mentioning the mawkish visions to Quill€™s dying mother. Too much, Gunn.
