Marvel Phase 4: 10 Mistakes Marvel Studios Has Already Made
3. Introducing The Real Mandarin
Iron Man 3 revealed that The Mandarin was just a creation of A.I.M.'s Aldrich Killian, and the response...well, it wasn't good. Shortly after, Marvel Studios retconned the threequel by releasing a One-Shot confirming that there was a "real" Mandarin, a strange move which undervalued what we had seen in Shane Black's film.
Now, the plan is for The Mandarin to make his proper big screen debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (played by Tony Leung). Everything we've heard about the movie sounds great, but this feels like Marvel Studios is pandering to the wrong type of fans, and this villain's time has passed.
While he has clashed with Shang-Chi in the comic books, The Mandarin is traditionally an Iron Man villain, and that 2008 movie set the stage for an eventual confrontation between the two. It never happened and Marvel Studios fumbled the ball when it did (albeit with a drunk actor called Trevor). Going back to that well feels redundant now, and not something we needed in Phase 4.
