Maze Runner: The Death Cure Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

2. The Plot Is Total Nonsense

One of the more consistent flaws of YA adaptations is that the narratives are, for the most part, utter nonsense that goes in one ear and out the other for most audiences. The Maze Runner, especially in this third entry, is no exception.

The Death Cure's core premise, which sees both the Gladers and preposterously-named W.C.K.D. seeking out a cure for the Flare virus, is basically a mash up of a Mad Max-style chase movie, a dozen different types of zombie film, and The Hunger Games.

It's pure, loony nonsense that's full of dubious narrative logic and "because plot" moments, and though things generally move at a fast enough pace that you won't have too much time to think about the bigger picture, you can't be blamed for craving something a little more intelligent and nuanced.

At its heart this is still a formulaic YA movie, just one executed decidedly better than most.
