MCU: 10 Best Characters Introduced In Phase 4 (So Far)
4. John Walker/USAgent
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was a solid continuation of Marvel’s more grounded realm and deftly explored weighty themes such as race, trauma and legacy. It handled its titular characters with respect and helped them stand on their own outside of Steve Rogers’ shadow.
Unfortunately, its primary antagonists did not fare as well. The Flagsmashers had understandable motives but were undermined by weak characterization, a lack of focus and the presence of one John Walker/USAgent. The Captain America replacement was not a villain in the traditional sense but provided a far more compelling sense of antagonism towards Sam and Bucky.
Played excellently by Wyatt Russell, Walker was a glimpse into what Dr. Abraham Erskine was trying to avoid during his days in the Super Soldier program. The war veteran was undeniably skilled, but he was loyal to his nation to a fault and his arrogance often got in his way.
Beneath all this was a man broken by his time at war and he was therefore unable to wear the mantle of Captain America with the same grace as his predecessor. This made him a complex and flawed character that stood out in a show that prided itself on its complex narratives and proceedings.
