Despite making the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, the legacy of Tony Stark lives on in the MCU. He has either been mentioned or referenced in just about every single Phase Four project so far, and could still make another appearance before 2022 is over. Some fans believe that it was actually Superior Iron Man in the trailer, rather than Monica Rambeau as Photon.

The Illuminati is the home of some of the smartest heroes in the history of the Marvel Universe, and there is absolutely no question that Iron Man fits this brief. He would likely irritate the hell out of the more serious members of the team, but no one could question his qualifications.

In the current landscape of the MCU, Tony’s death in Endgame is not a hurdle to another appearance. With the multiverse well and truly open, and Variants crossing paths between different universes, there is quite literally a limitless multiverse of Tony Starks that could be on this particular team.

Based on heavy rumours prior to the movie’s release, this could be the version that looks like Tom Cruise. The Top Gun actor was famously almost cast as Iron Man 14 years ago, and could be making his MCU debut as a Variant to Robert Downey Jr. this year. If this is the case, it simply wouldn’t make sense for him to be involved in the movie without being a part of the Illuminati.
