Captain America has led the Avengers ever since the team first came together to face Loki in the Battle of New York in 2012. However, just because Steve Rogers is gone, potentially dead, potentially living on the Moon, there is no reason for this to change.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier told a deeper story surrounding the history of the infamous shield, and while the man holding it has changed, his values and attitudes are the same. John Walker wasn’t a worthy successor to Steve Rogers, but Sam Wilson is.

Though reluctant to take the shield in the first instance, it was never about believing he didn’t have what it took to carry the mantle, it was instead about much deeper issues. Sam has always been earmarked by fans to step up to the Captain America name, and now is the time to put his money where his mouth is.

Being Captain America is about more than blonde hair, blue eyes, and a colourful shield. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier proved this, but there are certain expectations that do come with the name, and fearless leadership in the face of battle is one of them. He has to be the first through the gate, and if he has to fight an entire army on his own like Steve was prepared to do, then so be it.
