It's fitting that Tony Stark would go on to become Spider-Man's mentor in Spider-Man: Homecoming, because Robert Downey Jr did precisely that for Tom Holland too.

Holland has revealed that he was terrified of the audition process because of the size of the role, but that RDJ took him aside and told him "Listen, I remember my screentest for Iron Man. I remember how terrified I was. Just think of it as an audition. It's nothing too scary. If you get it wrong, we'll just start again. No pressure."

What a guy.

As part of the Spider-Man audition process, each of the finalists did separate screen tests with both Chris Evans and Downey Jr in order to see who had the best chemistry with both. The shortlist for the part was apparently Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Holland, Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), and Liam James.
