MCU: 10 Fascinating Facts Behind Captain America: Civil War (2016)

3. The Action Owes A Lot To John Wick

Marvel obviously has a thing about corridor fighting, particularly on the Netflix side of things, but the stairwell sequence in Civil War wasn't inspired by that fascination. Instead, the scene was actually put together and shot (at least partly) by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, the directors of John Wick. They worked as second unit directors (the least appreciated of all roles on movies) on Civil War.

Another second unit director, Spiro Razatos shot the car chase sequence having previously shot the Nick Fury chase in Winter Soldier.

As another little tidbit about an action sequence - well, sort of - if you felt like the film's climax was heading towards a showdown between the super soldiers and Captain America and Bucky and Iron Man, it was completely intentional. In order to dupe the audience, the directors asked composer Henry Jackman to compose a rousing beat for the lead up to the ice base sequence.

That was designed to make the audience expect a fight, which is why the misdirect works so successfully.
