While David Bowie appeared on the soundtrack for the original Guardians of the Galaxy, not only did director James Gunn want the artist to be the only musician to show up again on the sequel's new mixtape, but actually appear in the flesh.

At one time, there were plans for Bowie to cameo as one of Yondu's ragtag crew members, which would have been a fitting role for the enigmatic Starman. Through Marvel, the director contacted the singer and actor in 2016, who apparently was receptive to the idea. Sadly, Bowie passed away due to complications with cancer a month before filming began on the sequel.

The role went to somebody else, and while the artist's music wasn't actually featured in the sequel (due to the scene being cut), it was prominently used in the TV spots leading up to the film's release.
