MCU: 10 Possible Uses Of The Multiverse In Phase 4 (And Beyond)
9. To Combine The MCU With Sony's Marvel Universe
Remember in the run-up to 2018's Venom, when producer Amy Pascal stated that the movie would take place in the same world as the MCU's Spider-Man? At the time, nobody knew what to make of her comments, especially since MCU mastermind Kevin Feige - who was sat right next to her when she made those comments - looked extremely uncomfortable as soon as the words left her mouth.
The issue was clouded even further when Venom director Ruben Fleischer told the Los Angeles Times that he didn't know what he was allowed to say about the link between Spidey and Venom, stating that he didn't want to get into trouble "for saying something I’m not supposed to.”
When the movie eventually did come out there wasn't an explicit Spider-Man reference in sight, and it just seemed as though Venom existed in his own little bubble universe. Since the character is owned by Sony, not Disney, it makes sense that Venom is completely disconnected from the MCU, but what if all that pre-release confusion (much of it stemming from Pascal, a Sony executive at the time) was because the powers-that-be knew that the multiverse was incoming, and that it would be the key to explaining how Venom could appear in the MCU?
Like with the aforementioned Fox properties, this would be an easy, simple solution. It's interesting to note that the multiverse is being properly introduced in a joint Sony/Marvel Studios movie, almost like this has been the plan for quite some time. The only thing getting in the way here is a deal between Sony and Disney, but since they're currently playing ball with Spidey, there's no reason they couldn't do so again.
