9. The Frost Giant Story Should Have Been The Whole Film

The first half of Thor pulls no punches in upping the MCU's sense of scale and spectacle. Introducing viewers to the bitter rivalry between the Frost Giants and the Asgardians, the promise of an ancient war about to reignite is tantalising, especially when a bloodthirsty and naive future king like Thor is thrown into the mix.

In fact, the best story beats and character interactions in the movie are born out of this bubbling conflict. Thor's thirst for revenge in the opening act results in some incredible action scenes on a scale not yet seen in the MCU, all the while introducing a multitude of imaginative otherworldly locations that are still striking to this day.

Similarly, this action acts as the staging ground for Loki's winding plan to become King of Asgard not by allowing his father to be killed by his arch-rivals, but by orchestrating an assassination attempt on Odin only to conveniently thwart it at the last minute and look like the hero.

This plot thread is brilliantly executed, and does far more to further his development as a complex villain than his melodramatic rivalry with Thor, but unfortunately it's undercut because...
