MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Avengers: Age Of Ultron
9. James Spader's Performance Is Excellent (Even If Ultron Isn't)
There's little point denying that Ultron was a rather disappointing villain considering the immense hype and the huge potential for the character.
The main problem, aside from him turning out to be a fairly conventional rogue A.I. baddie, is that Whedon wrote him as too goofy and eccentric to be particularly threatening. This was presumably an attempt by Whedon to make Ultron more than just another awry A.I., but the balance was totally off-kilter and he was ultimately more silly than bada**.
However, you certainly can't fault James Spader, who did a marvellous, under-appreciated job voicing the character. His unique vocal cadence is nothing if not memorably demented, even if it's a shame he wasn't given stronger material to work with.
