MCU: 14 Things You Learn Rewatching Captain America: Civil War
9. Who Needs Origin Stories?
After two fairly recent Spider-Man movie series, Marvel would have been wrong to do another take on an already overly-familiar origin story, but it was still brave to simply state that Spidey was already operating in the MCU. And if it wasn't done properly, it could have been a disaster.
But by introducing Spidey in what amounts to a narrative aside (starting with that Queens title page that still brings up the hairs on the back of your neck), the Russos handled it perfectly. We got to see something of the character's nature, without having to see where he came from as a powered individual and the film loses nothing for not showing him being bitten by a spider. The same, of course, goes for Homecoming later.
And while Black Panther told something of an origin story, refusing to give T'Challa a traditional origin in Civil War really works for him too. Because without knowing him, we can be suspicious of him and he actually comes across as more of a bad-ass, which sets up that final scene with Zemo beautifully (more of which soon).
