Kevin Feige has already said that Captain Marvel will eventually lead the entire MCU, although that can be taken in a variety of ways. However, what if it really does mean she'll lead the Avengers and, not only that, but it happens as soon as next year?

Avengers 4 is likely to kill off at least one original hero, with Captain America and Iron Man looking the most at risk as things stands, and that would open up a power vacuum at the very top of the Avengers.

Other characters have been around longer, but with Carol Danvers' power-set, charisma, and natural leadership skills, she might be seen as the obvious candidate to take control of the team as the MCU heads into Phase 4. Having the movie end on a positive note is important, especially after the destruction of Infinity War's ending, so something that points to the future in an optimistic fashion seems nailed on, and Captain Marvel assembling her new team from what heroes are left is a great way of doing that and signalling a new era.
