MCU: Can Secret Invasion Still Happen After Captain Marvel?

1. They Can Still Do Secret Invasion, But Different To Envisaged

Kevin Feige himself has responded to the question of whether, after Captain Marvel, we could still have a Secret Invasion movie or arc in the MCU.

"Just like not all humans are bad, and not all humans are good, I think Skrulls probably have a variety of moralities amongst them," Feige told ComicBook.com. "When they can do what they can do, it probably gets very tempting. So, it's fun to have introduced this concept and see where it goes.

"As we saw in the tag, she's [Captain Marvel] with us now in the present day. But those intervening years between her soaring off with Talos and answering Fury's call, we think is ripe with potential for storytelling."

So again, there's definitely potential for more of the Skrulls, and of the Kree-Skrull War - but could that still lead to an actual invasion angle? If, say, Talos were to die, and the next generation of Skrulls take them into a more violent and villainous route, then it's certainly possible. There's still plenty of time to be explored, and if it's the mid-00s then it could even tie into the Black Widow movie as well.

If the Skrulls were to lose the war, then they might be driven to Earth again, but this time led by people who aren't so sympathetic. Talos' daughter could well turn out to be Veranke, the Skrull who leads the Secret Invasion in the comics. If they win the war, then they could become hungry for more power, with Earth an obvious next target since they've already proven they can infiltrate it (something Talos' daughter will remember).

They can't quite do Secret Invasion as envisaged before Captain Marvel. That film hasn't set in motion events where we could suddenly have a grand reveal of the Skrulls being in S.H.I.E.L.D. for 20+ years, or of someone like Nick Fury actually being a Skrull all along. And with Captain Marvel working with them, it complicates her role in things too. But it is possible that they could further build it in Captain Marvel 2 and perhaps even Captain Marvel 3 if they wanted to really play the long game with it, which is arguably the best approach for this kind of storyline. They can let it brew over time, allowing Captain Marvel movies to reach the present day, and drop hints in other films too: Black Widow, as mentioned, but also The Eternals, since Skrulls come from the Deviants, which is the diverging line of the Eternals created by the Celestials.

The bonus if it does happen now is that they're not just random shapeshifting villains, or even just characters we'll see as outright bad guys, since we know the struggle they went through. And that might make a Secret Invasion angle all the more interesting now.
