For a while, the MCU kept on repeating an incredibly frustrating trope - being that most hero vs villain outings tended to boil down to "Same verses Same".
What I mean is, a number of the villains were the negative to the heroic positive and it shows heavily in first solo pictures for the heroes.
In the first appearance of Ant-Man, Corey Stoll's character Darren Cross takes the mantle of the Yellow Jacket; a sinister equivalent of Paul Rudd's titular character.
Corey doesn't do a bad job as the villain of Ant-Man. But he doesn't do a great job either. We see his character as more of a bland businessman mad with ambition, and while there were production problems off-screen with Edgar Wright stepping away from the film, we can't help but think even he could not have solved this issue either.
Yellow Jacket isn't a fun villain. And in a film as light as Ant-Man we kind of needed a fun villain. While the fight-scenes are choreographed and photographed brilliantly, this villain just falls flat in the grand scheme of things.
