The Scene

Opening on the New Mexico desert, we see Agent Coulson's car speeding across the planes. He gets out, looks out over a valley and a giant crater is revealed. He picks up the phone and says simply "Sir, we found it" before the reveal of Mjolnir half buried in the sand.

What It Meant

Firstly that Thor was coming to the MCU (which we knew at the time), but also that he was probably going to become one of the Avengers, given Phil Coulson's role in bringing the team together.

In hindsight, the mighty hammer being on Earth tied in to Thor's exile for disobeying his father, which was revealed to be a key part of the opening act of Thor. How SHIELD knew to be looking for it remains a little murky, but that sort of fits with the way they were presented in these early teases.
