First Appearance: The Avengers #71

Although though it's mainly taken a backseat to most of the MCU's films, the past is integral to the franchise's overarching narrative. Captain America: The First Avenger illustrates that point immaculately, and with Captain Marvel set to take place in the nineties of all decades, it's clear that history has a major part to play in the MCU's architecture.

We may not know how Steve Rogers will come out of Avengers 4, or even Chris Evans will ever return to the role even if prequels present a chance to do so, but World War II still feels like an era ripe with storytelling potential. The Howling Commandos themselves have been optioned for a full-length feature - perhaps with Nick Fury Sr. at the helm - but there's another superhero team who could probably do with a debut: The Invaders.

One of Marvel's wartime super-teams, The Invaders were comprised of Steve Rogers, Namor and the original android Human Torch, whose suit you can actually spot in The First Avenger.

Granted, it's one of the less conventional angles to take in preparing yet another Marvel ensemble, but the Invaders would work as a one-off later down the line.
