MCU Phase Four: 8 Marvel Legacy Heroes Who Need To Appear
2. Captain America - Sam Wilson
Rumours about Chris Evans hanging up his shield and saying goodbye to the role of Steve Rogers have been doing the rounds for years. As beloved as Evans' portrayal of Cap is, it'd be very surprising if he stayed on past Avengers 4. So the MCU will be needing a new star-spangled man with a plan. The question is: who should it be?
There are two big contenders for the position: Steve's best pals Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson. Bucky might well get the job, as Sebastian Stan has let slip before that he is signed up for a shed-load of Marvel movies. While Stan is great as Bucky, going by the comics there is only one character who deserves to be the next Cap and that's Sam.
While Bucky briefly took up his friend's role on the page, it didn't suit him. The much more successful successor to Steve is Sam Wilson, who has proven himself as courageous and morally-incorruptible as Steve was (well, until the whole HydraCap debacle). Many have also pointed out the symbolic importance of having a black man as the Marvel superhero who represents America.
It remains to be seen, then, whether Marvel will entrust one of their tentpole heroes to either Stan or Anthony Mackie. Both would do a good job, but comic book history tells us it should be the latter. We can even see what he might look like, thanks to the below fan art from Aiko Aiham:
