Men In Black 4 Announced: 10 Ways To Make It Not Suck

2. A Consistent Plot

Page 9 This is very vital to the film. It is the biggest flaw that the last two have suffered and is an element that has been neglected in far too many films over the past few years. The first Men In Black walked a fine line between action sci-fi and straight comedy. Some of the aliens had silly quirks but many of them were serious characters who had real stakes in the story (see Edgar). The jokes were entertaining and relevant but the screenplay was tight and tethered closely to our hearts by the arc of Agent J. His brief crisis learning of the agency and then constant commentary on the silliness of the organisation made the film feel real. It was balanced appropriately. Men In Black 2 was tonally embarrassed. It suffered from the age old mistake of believing that bigger is better and that if the original jokes were extended, the whole thing will be a whole lot funnier. It was a straight comedy. Only without the humour. Men In Black 3, on the other hand, was mostly on par with the first film; although the emotional sub-plot could definitely have been executed more effectively. What it mostly suffered from was poor writing in terms of the universe at large. The inconsistent nature of time travel presented in the film was terrible and we don€™t want another film this badly blemished by plot holes. Make the plot straightforward, the setting original and give the villains strong motivations. That€™s all it will take. Well...that and one other very, very important thing...
