Men In Black 4 Announced: 10 Ways To Make It Not Suck

5. Emotional Punches

Page 6 Who would€™ve guessed that Men In Black is a franchise capable of a good emotional turning point? The twist regarding Agent J€™s dad added a nice dash of humanity to the proceedings in the last instalment. An extra dimension that was sorely lacking in the first two. Now don€™t get me wrong. Men In Black 3 didn€™t have me fooled for a second. The twist was mind-numbingly predictable and could€™ve been spotted by a chimpanzee the moment Agent K made the out of place comment €œdon€™t ever speak of your father like that€ at the beginning. That doesn€™t change the fact that it was surprisingly effective on an emotional level. It wasn€™t the best turning point I€™ve come across, but when Agent J watched his father die, I was a little bit moved. I may have seen it coming, but it was still set up well enough that I was sad to see it happen. This new emotional dimension isn€™t one that should be abandoned in the new sequel. For one, we now get to see how Agent J€™s perception of Agent K has changed after seeing what happened at the rocket launch. That on its own has the potential to spark an interesting character arc. Whatever happens this time around, it should be more personal for the characters. Less invasions, more inter-personal conflict. It would even be nice if this entry connected back to the first to give the whole series a little bit of unity. Just make the story meaningful and not a one-off event that changes nothing for the agents. Remember Men In Black 2. Oh yeah, me neither.
