Michael Bay: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

8. Armageddon

Armageddon Seeming like a solid-gold classic compared to the above two, Armaggedon is a pitch-perfect example of a cheeseball action film that is entertaining precisely because it's a cheeseball action film. Bay takes a diverse cast of actors (including Steve Buscemi, Bruce Willis, Michael Clarke Duncan and Ben Affleck), and hurls them into the most ridiculous scenario possible - an asteroid is heading towards Earth, and only a team of blue-collar drill-men can stop it. It's a fantastically overblown film that's nevertheless flawed from top to bottom; the characters aren't particularly likable for the most part, and the romantic interludes between Affleck and Liv Tyler are utterly cringe-inducing. It strains to be emotionally resonant at the finale, finally blaring out Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" in an attempt to push even the most manly men over the edge. Did it work? For many, yes, but you'll be angry at yourself for shedding a single tear afterwards.
