Michael Bay: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

7. The Island

The Island A rare box office bomb for the director, The Island only barely made its budget back, and though it was a shameless rip-off of countless superior sci-fi films, it at least had a little more ambition than most of the director's output. The curious narrative has two clones - who are being bred so their organs can be harvested for each "original" human - realising their fate, and then trying to escape the mysterious island where they, and all the other clones, are being held. Easily one of Bay's best looking and most ambitious films, the film might pilfer a set-piece almost verbatim from Bay's previous Bad Boys II, but by throwing flying vehicles into the mix, he finds a way to keep things fresh and exciting enough. On the downside, McGregor gives a pretty stodgy performance - his American accent is dreadful - and for some reason, Bay wouldn't let Scarlet Johansson film a nude sex scene because he knew it would get him an R-rating (so, how about filming the scene anyway and releasing it on the DVD...or on YouTube?)
