And 5 That Sucked...
5. Cliff Brumby - Get Carter (2000)
Actor's playing characters in remakes of their own films (especially when they play a different role) are rarely ever received well. Caine appears in the remake of the 1971 Get Carter not as Jack Carter, but as Cliff Brumby - the man indirectly responsible for Carter's death in the original film. The remake generally follows the basic narrative of the original, but aside from Stallone not being a suitable replacement for Caine's original, the film is extremely light on the subtext and themes that appear in the original. Adding on to this, Caine's performance as Brumby just simply isn't particularly memorable. Caine's presence in the film feels largely due to the remake's creators wanting to feature the original Carter as fan-service, but it just feels flat. Caine's performance isn't awful,
but playing Brumby in the remake almost takes away from the original by imagining the British stalwart in the role of the villain. Just to make matters worse, Get Carter isn't the only example of Caine appearing in a remake of his own film...
