Michael Caine: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Andrew Wyke - Sleuth (2007)

The original Sleuth, in which Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine face off in a battle of wits and misdirection to outwit each other is a classic British film of the 70s, and while the remake (featuring Caine and Jude Law) is a passable film, it never reaches the heights of the original. Caine assumes the part that Olivier performed in the original, that of a novelist that attempts to frame his wife's lover for the theft of his valuables under the guise of simply letting Law's character take the jewels for the purposes of letting him leave with a wife he has grown bored of. Unlike the original, the chemistry between Caine and Law simply isn't as tantalising, and the addition of a bizarre homosexual sub-plot between the two characters just doesn't fit. The film is notable for two reasons. One: Sleuth marks the second time that Jude Law performs a character originally played by Caine and two, the film marks the second instance of Caine appearing in a remake of his own film but in a different role. It's one of Caine's worst films not only for the reasons stated above, but because of the same reason that his starring in the remake of Get Carter wasn't received awfully well - Caine's recurring appearance simply takes away from the original.
