How many actors can claim to have both their best and worst career performances in the same franchise, playing different characters? For every subtly brilliant tick to his performance as Marty McFly, theres a counter-point in the awful excuse for a performance he offers for his own ancestor Seamus. The Irish accent is sub-Tom Cruise in Far And Away and impressively worse than Sean Connery in The Untouchables (who didnt even bother with an accent 95% of the time). You get the feeling that its all supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but then you look at Thomas F Wilsons brilliant, transformative performances as Biff Tannens ancestors (and the older version of himself) and Crispin Glovers duel performances, and it falls apart. Fox simply cant pull off the performance with the necessary gravitas - hes supposed to be moral heart of the third film (because Doc is too busy breaking his own time continuum rules by shacking up with dead schoolteachers) - but hes just a joke. So his importance is wholly ruined and his character ends up feeling entirely superfluous in a film series with zero fat to trim. Which of these performances is your favourite from Michael J Fox?
