Michael J Fox: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
1. Marty McFly - Back To The Future Franchise (1985-90)
In terms of acting prowess, Marty McFly probably isnt Foxs most impressive performance, but theres no arguing with the fact that it is both his most important and his most impactful. As Robert Zemeckis so shrewdly recognised when he harshly canned Eric Stoltz, McFly needed a very specific brand of charisma. And in Foxs subtle flourishes - the breaking voice, the over-active eyebrows and the perpetual backwards running - he found the perfect answer. While Christopher Lloyds more flamboyant performance (and Crispin Glovers before he too was canned) stole more attention, Foxs more reserved, more clever performance as Marty was just as important. Hes breathless and supremely likeable, somehow managing to be a hero not just for 1985, but for all time, and he deserves his position at the top of the list of cinemas most iconic characters.
