Michael Sheen: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Tony Blair - Various (2003-2010)

Sheen's most famous partnerships with Peter Morgan, meanwhile, are undoubtedly his turns as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Beginning with the fact-based drama The Deal, about the agreement between the future Labour leader and his eventual successor Gordon Brown that the latter politician would not oppose Blair in the 1994 leadership election. It's an episode in British politics that was already infamous, since Blair eventually reneged on their agreement to let Brown take over as Labour leader and Prime Minister, with his support. The Deal was followed by Morgan's film The Queen, looking at the aftermath of Princess Diana's death, before Sheen bowed out with The Special Relationship, exploring the friendship between Blair and George W Bush. What's so brilliant - and, at times, eerie and unsettling - about Sheen's turns as Blair, is that he's almost identical to the former Prime Minister. His performances as Frost and Williams are impressive, but Michael Sheen could genuinely have replaced Blair and nobody would've noticed. He nails everything about the man, whilst not forgetting that he's delivering an act - a thoroughly compelling one.
