Jackson had considered making The Hobbit before he ended up making The Lord Of The Rings, but after a change of mind the version ultimately released came in the shadow of his mammoth achievement.

The original Middle-Earth novel was split into three, with the single narrative fragmented. The reaction was mixed - some found the whole thing ponderous and overlong, while others were just happy to be back in Middle-Earth once more.
