Mile 22 Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs
4. Mark Wahlberg's Irritating Protagonist
Mark Wahlberg of course plays the movie's protagonist, expert operator James Silva, and though there's a clear desire here to make Silva a slightly different type of Wahlberg hero, he ultimately comes off more obnoxious than intriguing.
A rushed exposition dump over the opening titles reveals that Silva was orphaned at a young age and has an extraordinarily high intelligence level. Furthermore, he has a tic - because of course he does - and any time he feels over-stimulated by the world around him, he snaps an elastic band on his wrist in order to calm himself down.
It earns unfavourable comparisons to Ben Affleck's hero in The Accountant, and further compounding the issue is the fact that Wahlberg makes Silva a loud, overbearing a**hole who shouts at pretty much anyone in his vicinity with reckless abandon.
There's precious little charm here, and while it should've been interesting to see the actor tackle an edgier, tougher character, ultimately he's so fiercely unlikeable and annoying he severely hampers the movie's entertainment value.
