Mile 22 Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs
3. John Malkovich Is Totally Wasted
This is acting legend John Malkovich's second collaboration with Peter Berg after Deepwater Horizon and, boy, is he completely wasted here or what? Malkovich plays black ops supervisor James Bishop, and spends almost the entirety of his role confined to a single control room literally phoning in his performance, while kitted out in a ridiculous wig no less.
Malkovich is more than up to the task, as ever, but he's rarely given anything more than mouldy placeholder dialogue, and only in the final stretch of the movie does he get to do anything even remotely interesting.
Considering his ludicrous talents, and how well he worked with Berg on their previous team-up, it's utterly ridiculous that an actor of Malkovich's caliber was even hired for such a throwaway role.
