Mission: Impossible - 15 Most WTF Franchise Moments

4. The Underwater Sequence (Rogue Nation)

The franchise hit peak insanity with Rogue Nation, which saw Tom Cruise putting himself in the sort of danger most A-list mega-stars would gladly offload to their stuntmen.

A key sequence in the film sees Ethan diving into an underwater server bank in order to retrieve a data drive, and as committed as ever, Cruise basically decided to perform the sequence for real.

That's right. Though many elements of the scene were added in post-production, the footage of Ethan holding his breath in the final movie is all Tom Cruise. He performed the three-minute sequence in one single, unbroken take while holding his breath, though director Christopher McQuarrie ultimately spliced other scenes into it to prevent audiences from losing interest.

If that wasn't insane enough, Cruise reportedly trained hard enough that he was able to hold his breath for over six minutes at a time. That's a 50-something-year-old man right there, folks.
