Mission Impossible: Fallout - 18 WTF Moments
17. That Brilliant Wolf Blitzer Troll
The movie's pre-titles sequence features arguably the series' best use of its beloved mask trope, with the botched Berlin job leading into a report from CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer that the three nuclear weapons have been successfully detonated, much to Ethan's horror.
Ethan and Luther (Ving Rhames) then interrogate a captured weapons expert who can give them a lead to terrorist leader John Lark, but he only agrees to unlock his phone if they get Blitzer to read his manifesto on the air.
Ethan makes the call, and within moments, Blitzer reads the manifesto, much to the weapons expert's smug delight. After he unlocks his phone and Ethan and Luther get the data they need, they kill the lights and the walls literally fall off the hospital room, revealing that the entire set-up was an elaborate dupe by the IMF.
What's more, Blitzer was in fact Benji (Simon Pegg) wearing a Blitzer mask, and though the weapons expert believed he was in a car accident two weeks prior, the crash actually only happened an hour ago.
From the hilariously over-the-top nature of the ruse to Tom Cruise's note-perfect performance-within-a-performance, this was an incredible way to kick the movie off.
